Can bryophyte groups increase functional resolution in tundra ecosystems?

چکیده

The relative contribution of bryophytes to plant diversity, primary productivity, and ecosystem functioning increases towards colder climates. Bryophytes respond environmental changes at the species level, but because bryophyte are relatively difficult identify, they often lumped into one functional group. Consequently, function remains poorly resolved. Here, we explore how higher resolution diversity can be encouraged implemented in tundra ecological studies. We briefly review previous classifications roles ecosystems their susceptibility change. Based on shoot morphology colony organization, then propose twelve easily distinguishable groups. To illustrate groups help elucidate variation effects responses, compiled existing data water holding capacity, a key trait. Although mask potentially high interspecific intraspecific variability, found better separation group means compared with grouping systems regarding capacity. This suggests that our truly represent ecosystems. Lastly, provide recommendations improve monitoring community study sites.

Endozoochory by slugs can increase bryophyte establishment and species richness

Herbivory can aff ect plant community composition and diversity by removing biomass and reducing light competition. Herbivory may particularly benefi t low growing species such as bryophytes, which are frequently limited by light competition. Gastropods are important herbivores of seed plants and cryptogams, furthermore, they can disperse propagules such as seeds and spores via endozoochory. Ho...

Upscaling CH4 Fluxes Using High-Resolution Imagery in Arctic Tundra Ecosystems

Arctic tundra ecosystems are a major source of methane (CH4), the variability of which is affected by local environmental and climatic factors, such as water table depth, microtopography, and the spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation communities present. There is a disconnect between the measurement scales for CH4 fluxes, which can be measured with chambers at one-meter resolution and eddy co...

Simulating nonsorted circle development in arctic tundra ecosystems

[1] Nonsorted circles, ubiquitous to the Arctic Tundra region, are patterned ground features with circular semibarren areas surrounded by vegetation. These circles are formed and persist as an ecosystem due to complex soil-water-energy-ice-plant relationships and dynamics in the Arctic. In this paper, we present the first model that captures the dynamics of the physical and biological component...
